some family history & pictures

bio

Bobby is a sixth-generation musician. He began performing at age 7 in his father’s band, and left at 17 to pursue his widening musical interests. As a performer, Bobby has shared the bill with some of the top country and folk artists, including Vince Gill, Bill Staines, Bill Morrissey, Deana Carter, Bryan White, Arlo Guthrie, The Neilds, and Jess Klein. As a sought-after lead guitarist he has shared the stage with George Jones, Asleep at the Wheel, Willie Nelson, The Bellamy Brothers, Waylon Jennings, and many others.

Bobby has written songs that have aired on the hit television series Touched By An Angel, Walker Texas Ranger, Soul Food, and Judging Amy, among others. Another of his songs was featured in the Danny Devito/Bette Midler movie Drowning Mona. He has performed at the legendary Bluebird Cafe and other venues in Nashville, and his guitar and vocal work have been featured on recordings by Arlo Guthrie, Sarah Lee Guthrie, Bernice Lewis and a host of other album projects. Bobby is a former staff writer with HoriPro Entertainment Group in Nashville. Today he also works as a producer and recording engineer at Derek Studios, where he has shared his knowledge and skills with many artists of varying styles, ranging from folk to Americana to world music.

In 1999 his debut album Hope’s Cafe received a warm welcome at Americana Radio in the US and abroad, as did his second release Already Home with the help of veteran Americana promoter Bill Wence in 2002. In Bobby’s 2003 release Love on the Border the vivid portraits and human experience are taken to even greater heights, drawing from an ever widening musical palette. Bobby’s fourth CD, Bobby Sweet Live showcases his dynamic stage presence in concert at The Guthrie Center. This CD captures the songwriter’s bare essence in a musically intimate setting. Echoing the response of radio programmers in the States and abroad, Andrea Stolle of Radio Teutoburger Wald in Germany summed it up, “Great songs, impressive lyrics, and a fantastic singer!”

Bobby has spent time in the Andes of Patagonia, Argentina, a pristine wilderness far from telephones and electricity, accessible only by horseback. His encounters with the simple life and beautiful people of this region inspired several of the songs and emotions of Already Home. His travel experiences also encompass sharing music with the chief of a Dogon village in Mali, West Africa, and building houses in Nicaragua with Habitat for Humanity. Back home in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts, Bobby lives in a small-town community where the love and lives of those around him continually provide the wellspring for new songs.

Bobby’s latest CD, Days Roll By was recorded in the “old school” method. Inspired by the musicality of the live album, he took the band into the studio to record live performances of his new material. No click tracks were used, and there were no “fix ups” on the band or his vocals. The few guest artists and Bobby’s solos were recorded as overdubs. An engaging storyteller, Bobby is at home on the stage, whether performing solo, with his eclectic trio, or with the full band.
