Timberframing in Patagonia, Argentina. Here we are in in the foothills of the Andes working on the timber frame. This was my first trip to Argentina, and just the beginning of the story. This trip was led by the Heartwood School.

Asado, Argentina. Argentina’s version of the barbecue. That’s a goat cooking by the fire in the background. We are having a little song swap here between the gauchos and the gringo. This was an all nighter.

Work and play in Nicaragua.Habitat for Humanity has ongoing projects worldwide. I traveled with a group from the Berkshires to Leon, Nicaragua. Here we are starting a habitat house.

Music is everywhere. (Nicaragua) Here is an amazing singer and guitar player. I took a break near the end of the workday because I heard him playing a couple of house away. Folks gathered from the rest of the street. Nica songs, a few Pirate songs, and a lot of laughs.

Mali, West Africa. Here we are in a Dogon village. The man on the left is the Chief of the village. In the middle is his friend who is playing a monochord. I am improvising along with him. In the next moment the Chief broke out into this wild crazy dance, as if possessed by the music. My sister Tina (front) and I sang a song together here, and the Chief placed rings on each of our fingers and declared that we were now “in the family”.

How do you play this thing??

Ancient city of Djenne, Africa. I am standing in the middle of Djenne and people are coming from prayer out of the Grand Mosque. This entire small city is constructed out of mud. This mosque is the largest mud building in the world. It is customary to barter for everything here. I bartered a little money and a Bob Dylan song for a beautiful hand dyed mud cloth.
